WCB PEI launches three new online safety courses for workplaces

The Workers Compensation Board of Prince Edward Island is expanding its free online training options with three new certificate courses aimed at helping workers and employers improve health and safety on the job.

The new offerings – Employer Incident Investigations, OHS Essentials and Psychological Health and Safety – are now available on the WCB website and can be accessed “anytime, anywhere,” according to a news release dated February 5, 2026.

“Our online courses are built to be practical, easy to follow, and directly relevant to PEI workplaces,” said Danny Miller, the WCB’s Director of Occupational Health and Safety. “Whether you’re a worker looking to build knowledge or an employer strengthening their safety program, these courses are a simple way to learn and apply key concepts. Since we launched our online certificates in May 2024, 2,034 people have registered and 1,385 completion certificates have been delivered.”

Flexible, self‑paced learning

All of the WCB’s online certificate courses are self‑paced and tailored to Prince Edward Island workplaces, with content aligned to provincial legislation. Participants receive a WCB completion certificate upon finishing a course.

The courses can be used on their own or integrated into existing workplace initiatives, such as worker onboarding, joint health and safety committee plans, or broader safety programs.

Course overviews

• Employer Incident Investigations: This course is designed to give employers and workers the essential knowledge to respond to workplace incidents, meet legal reporting requirements and conduct investigations with a focus on prevention rather than blame. It covers the full process from immediate response and root cause analysis through to sharing lessons learned to support a stronger safety culture.

• OHS Essentials: Aimed at helping employers and workers understand their legal responsibilities under Prince Edward Island’s Occupational Health and Safety Act and its regulations, this course uses practical examples and guidance to explain key concepts such as training requirements, hazard prevention strategies and compliance obligations. Content is adapted to reflect workplace size and type, with the goal of making it relevant across a wide range of industries.

• Psychological Health and Safety: This course focuses on why psychological health matters in the workplace and how employers can meet their legal responsibilities under the Occupational Health and Safety Act. Topics include the impact of mental wellbeing on safety outcomes, employer duties to protect psychological health, and practical measures for creating a supportive, compliant work environment.

Additional training and supports

Beyond online certificates, the WCB offers free in‑person and pre‑recorded webinars on a range of workplace health and safety topics. Employers and workers can also request free onsite workshops delivered by WCB staff.

The Board hosts an annual Workplace Health and Safety Conference featuring multiple workshops and learning sessions. Information about the 2026 conference is expected to be released in the coming weeks.
