Worker dead after being crushed in industrial incident

One worker died in an industrial incident in Harrow, Ont. on Wednesday, according to reports. The incident happened at the Atlas Tube workplace on Clark Street.

The employee was loading steel onto a flat bed trailer and was crushed. The worker was pronounced deceased at the scene. The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP), Essex-Windsor EMS and Essex Fire crews responded to the incident around 4 a.m. on Wednesday.

Police have not released the individual’s name pending family notification.

We are terribly saddened and shocked by this tragic incident and have conveyed our deepest condolences to the family," said Zekelman Industries in a statement, according to a CTV News report. Atlas Tube is a division of Zekelman Industries.

"Zekelman Industries has always prioritized the safety of our team members. We are fully cooperating with an ongoing Ministry of Labour investigation into this tragic matter and remain committed to the highest safety protocol standards for the protection of our teammates."

Two investigators have been assigned to the case, according to a report from the Windsor Star.

This incident follows several other workplace tragedies that have claimed the lives of workers this year.

In March, a man died while another was seriously injured following a workplace incident in Brantford, Ont. The incident happened at Patriot Forge, a metal processing and die-forging company. That same month, a worker died in Oshawa, Ont. after a workplace accident involving a piece of machinery. The worker is believed to have died on site.

Previously, Fine Choice Foods Ltd. in Richmond, B.C. was fined $165,714.50 after one of its workers was seriously injured in an incident involving a noodle machine.

Meanwhile, British Columbia employer Parallel Wood Products Ltd. was fined $30,171.24 after one of its workers was injured on the job. The incident happened at the company’s Williams Lake worksite. The worker was attempting to clear a jammed board at the infeed roll section of a planer machine when they sustained a serious injury.

Previously, Alberta employer Insituform Technologies Limited was also fined $100,000 inclusive of the 20 per cent victim fine surcharge after one of its workers was seriously injured. The worker’s arm got caught in the rollers while they were rolling tubing into the back of a tractor-trailer with hydraulic rollers.
