This is a tragic accident and all of our thoughts are with our colleague, his loved ones and the wider team at Prestea.

A worker was fatally injured last week at a mine owned by Golden Star Resources, the company said in a press release.

The incident happened in the afternoon of March 24 in Prestea Gold Mine’s main access drive on 17 level which is currently being developed.

The employee was injured when he was trapped in the drive as one of the ore carts on a locomotive was derailed, said the company. The company did not provide further details about the identity of the worker.

"This is a tragic accident and all of our thoughts are with our colleague, his loved ones and the wider team at Prestea,” said Andrew Wray, CEO of Golden Star. “The accident will be investigated fully and we will redouble our efforts to make sure that we prevent anything of this nature from happening in the future.”

Wray also said that they will provide support for all those impacted by this accident.

Golden Star said that it notified relevant authorities, and there will be a full investigation to establish the exact causes of the accident. The company also suspended all activities underground at Prestea on March 25 “as a sign of respect” to the victim.
