He was injured on March 2, 2023
More than a year after Samir Subedi's fatal accident at an Edmonton smokehouse, 26 workplace safety charges have been laid. Sofina Food Inc. faces charges under Alberta's Occupational Health and Safety Act.
Subedi, 33, was injured on March 2, 2023, at Sofina's facility on 56th Avenue in south Edmonton. He entered the smokehouse to check the temperature and was trapped inside. Despite rescue efforts, Subedi was found unconscious by a fellow worker and died the same day in the burn unit at the University of Alberta Hospital.
The charges allege that Subedi was exposed to fatal heat because the smokehouse door could not be opened from the inside. Investigators claim the company failed to ensure the door could be easily opened, did not maintain smokehouse equipment properly, and did not conduct necessary hazard assessments.
A spokesperson for Sofina Foods stated the company fully cooperated with the investigation and will not comment further as the case is now before the courts. The company expressed condolences, saying Subedi is an important part of the Sofina family.
